The World Heart Observatory, developed by the World Heart Federation, is a critical initiative aimed at collecting, analyzing, and disseminating global data on cardiovascular health.

Optima was tasked with redesigning and enhancing the observatory’s website, transforming it into a powerful, user-friendly platform that enables the World Heart Federation team to take control of their data and provide deeper insights into global cardiovascular disease (CVD) trends. This project is an ongoing collaboration to build Observatory 2.0—a faster, more flexible platform with robust data analysis and visualization capabilities.

The previous version of the observatory was costly to maintain, visually outdated, and limited in functionality, featuring only four basic charts. The primary challenge was to transform this into a comprehensive, data-rich platform that offers a clear and engaging way to explore cardiovascular health statistics from around the world. Additionally, the data provided to us came from various sources and formats, making it necessary to combine them into cohesive, usable datasets.

Optima’s goal was to create a platform that not only presents data visually but also empowers the WHF team to analyze, compare, and share insights in real time. We redesigned the website’s layout and visual elements to match the World Heart Federation’s brand and developed a clean, accessible design with a focus on clarity. We ensured that the data and reports generated are easy to interpret and accessible to all users, regardless of technical ability and users can explore data by country or region, providing a more comprehensive view of CVD trends globally.

Key to the success of this redesign was our use of AM Charts and iframes to format and display data in a visually compelling and interactive way. These charts enable users to explore cardiovascular data by region or country, offering a global perspective on CVD trends. We also focused on developing the backend functionality to give the WHF team more control over data manipulation, allowing them to monitor heart health trends, risk factors, and disparities across various demographics. We were able to combine data from various sources into unified, easy-to-navigate sets, enabling better insights and comparability across regions.

In addition to the charts, we developed other interactive features, including a Heart Fact Generator, which allows users to explore the impact of CVD in their specific country, and a World Heart Observatory Quiz to test users’ knowledge and help them interrogate the data to find answers in a fun and engaging way.

Optima’s work on the World Heart Observatory has created a stronger, more versatile platform that will continue to evolve alongside the World Heart Federation’s needs. With greater flexibility, enhanced visualization, and a user-friendly interface, the observatory now provides a dynamic platform for tracking cardiovascular health trends worldwide. As an essential resource in the fight against cardiovascular disease, the Observatory’s commitment to data-driven research, clear communication, and advocacy is now fully supported by a cutting-edge, flexible platform that will provide insights for years to come.
