The World Energy Council (WEC) is the leading global network of energy leaders, with a mission to promote the sustainable use and supply of energy for the benefit of all.

In 2018, Optima was selected to redesign the WEC website, transforming it into a modern, engaging platform that reflects its global presence and the breadth of its initiatives. With over 7,000 members, the WEC operates across the entire energy spectrum, covering sectors such as power, utilities, government, finance, technology, and transport. Our task was to create a website that would not only showcase WEC’s wide-ranging activities but also provide a seamless user experience across its various sub-brands and initiatives.

The primary challenge was to structure the website in a way that effectively communicated WEC’s broad scope of work, from policy insights and research to global events and partnerships. With a variety of sub-brands and microsites, including the Future Energy Leaders (FELs), World Energy Academy, and Insights Toolkit, it was essential to integrate these elements in a cohesive manner while maintaining clear navigation for diverse audiences. Additionally, the site needed to promote WEC’s global events, such as the World Energy Congress, while supporting ongoing projects like the Innovation Forums and Ministerial Roundtables.

Optima approached the project with a focus on clarity, user engagement, and scalability. We started by redesigning the site architecture to ensure that WEC’s extensive resources, reports, and tools were easily accessible to its diverse audience, from policymakers to industry leaders. We also developed a design system that allowed WEC’s sub-brands, such as Scenarios, Trilemma, and Dynamic Resilience, to shine while maintaining the integrity of the WEC brand.

Key Features:

  • Microsites Integration: We integrated several of WEC’s key sub-brands and internal resources into the main website, allowing for seamless access to tools like the Scenarios Toolkit and Issues Monitor.
  • Global Event Promotion: The site effectively promotes WEC’s World Energy Congress and other regional events, while also showcasing the BBC Storyworks "Humanising Energy" series. To highlight WEC’s global reach, we developed an interactive map that plots the films and their impact globally.
  • Visual Branding: In 2023, we created a centenary logo that reflects WEC’s 100-year legacy while looking forward to the future. This new logo was integrated across the site, maintaining consistency with WEC’s core brand but bringing a fresh energy to its visual identity. Similarly, we developed a new Congress logo for the 2024 event in Rotterdam, alongside designing a dedicated holding page and promotional video.
  • Collaboration with WEC: To ensure smooth implementation, Optima worked closely with the WEC team, providing a dedicated server where we could apply design solutions and share code for testing before the final launch. This collaborative approach allowed us to test functionality and design iteratively, ensuring the final site was robust and user-friendly.

Key Deliverables:

  • Redesign of the Main Website: A modern, responsive website that showcases WEC’s global influence and its extensive network of energy leaders.
  • Integration of Sub-Brands and Resources: A cohesive platform that allows users to access WEC’s internal resources, such as Innovation Forums, Future Energy Leaders, and the World Energy Academy.
  • Event Promotion & Global Engagement: A dynamic site that promotes global events, with interactive features such as the BBC Storyworks Humanising Energy series and a global map to visualize WEC’s impact.
  • Centenary and Congress Branding: Design of the 100-year centenary logo and the new Rotterdam Congress logo to mark WEC’s continued influence and future direction.

The redesigned WEC website successfully unified the organization’s vast range of activities, making it easier for users to access reports, events, and tools. The integration of sub-brands and microsites, along with the addition of interactive elements, provided a more engaging experience for WEC’s global audience. The new branding—reflecting both the centenary celebration and the upcoming Congress—reinforces WEC’s status as a leader in sustainable energy transitions. The website has become a critical tool in driving WEC’s mission forward, serving as a hub for global engagement and energy leadership.
