NCD Alliance Reporting the impact of COVID-19 on non-communicable disease communities
The resilience & recovery from COVID-19 report has set the standard for future pandemic guidance in the health sector
The NCD Alliance is a global network with over 300 members across 80 countries, dedicated to improving prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Optima has been a long-term design partner of the NCD Alliance (Non-Communicable Disease), collaborating with them since 2014 on various projects, including their Drupal website and supporting materials. In 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Alliance produced a key report on the pandemic's impact on those affected by NCDs, and Optima was tasked with designing the report in 10 languages for use globally both in print and online.
The report, titled Resilience & Recovery, brought together critical information from across the NCD Alliance’s network, presenting it in distinct sections for clarity. One of the main challenges was to create a design that clearly defined each of these sections while keeping the report cohesive and visually engaging. Additionally, the report had to be translated into 10 different languages, including Bengali, Swahili, Vietnamese, and Hindi, which required careful consideration of layout and typography to ensure readability in multiple scripts.
Timing was crucial, as the report needed to be published and available for a launch event. The digital version had to be scalable, allowing for the inclusion of future documents, and needed to be accessible in the NCD Alliance’s core languages: English, French, and Spanish.
Optima designed a printed report that effectively delineated the key pillars and sections of the report, sourcing imagery that resonated with the content’s global health focus. Each section was clearly defined, with visuals and infographics that enhanced understanding. For the digital version, we developed an HTML document, ensuring the online version maintained the same high design standards. The HTML format allowed for easy translation into the Alliance’s primary languages and ensured that the platform could be expanded to host future reports.
The Resilience & Recovery report was downloaded and read globally, receiving excellent feedback across the health sector as a crucial piece of guidance for managing the impacts of future pandemics on people with NCDs.
The online platform was highly scalable, and the NCD Alliance has since commissioned future reports to be designed and delivered in a similar way, building on the success of this project.
